What Are Course Level Categories

Modified on Mon, 30 Oct 2023 at 10:15 AM

In CourseFlow, columns represent the categories/classifications of curricular decision types. The default setting for the Course workspace starts with four categories: Preparation, Lesson, Artifacts and Assessments. However, you can edit column titles, move columns within a workflow as well as add, duplicate or delete columns as needed. See Editing Course Columns

When creating your Course workflow, it is recommended to set up and organize the columns first before adding other components. This is because columns within workflows are used to categorize the nodes, which are the building blocks representing “who is responsible” for the work to be done and the “types of tasks”.

  • Preparation column: a curricular decision that prepares students for their class. For example, providing students with a reading, a video, exercises ahead of the class, which will prime their knowledge and/or curiosity for the content that is to come during the class/lesson period (time frame);
  • Lesson column: a curricular decision that provides students with opportunities to gain the knowledge and skills associated with the course objectives/content. Typically this is the “in-class” time synchronous portion of a course(e.g. lectures, labs, studios/workshops);
  • Artifact column: a curricular decision that provides students with explicit tasks that produce some form of assignment that is reviewed by the teacher either weekly or periodically;
  • Assessment column: a curricular decision that provides students with feedback. Nodes for formative and summative tasks and activities to gauge progress and learning are placed here.
